A cross post regarding events

Hi Tribe,
I'm posting a response I gave over on Tabu's tribe because I think it's very important for our community to think long and hard on this. Supporting each others events is very important as long as it's done fairly and everyone gets paid, unlike the IBDC. We have to remember that this is a community, and noone ownes Las Vegas Belly Dance and the right to be the only dancer, the only promoter, the only vendor, costumer, musician, etc, etc here is my response:

"Having taught workshops all over the intesive and tribal massive don't have to be the only events in town, and I think it's wrong to discourage any of our local people from putting on events!! Yes, Alex made serious errors,but it helped the intensive that year, and for sure this year because people at rakkasah who had signed up for the intensive mistook it for the IBDC, and they were excited, so we got a lot more business at the intensive due to the IBDC.

Should he pay up, hell yes, I'm one of the people who hasn't been paid, but a lot of out of state dancers want to see it happen again, and as long as he schedules it at a different time of year I think it's fine.

If anyone schedules a big event that doesn't overlap the tribal massive and the intensive then I think we should welcome it!!!! When I was teaching my workshop in San Jose, there were 2 other events going on the same weekend. Like Delilah said, there is enough for everybody if we just wish each other well and support as much as we can.....I think it's called good Karma, the flip side of that is what happened in Las Vegas in the 80's, certian teachers and promoters thought they OWNED Vegas, and anyone who did something on their own was an outcast. It was soooooo ugly, everyone had to choose sides, it's all crap, I won't ever be a part of a community that supports that!!!! "

A nearby African Dance Retreat...

Hey folks...there is an African Dance Retreat being held in one of my
all time favorite places in the whole world...just over the border in
Tecopa, CA. This place has fabulous natural hot springs and one of my
favorite Bistro places to eat!!

I am going. And I think that I've convinced Hannah to join me. I'd
love to have a couple of other folks join us so we can get tipi
accomodations (they are fabulous with an fire pit on the inside). The
deadline is just around the corner.

A plea to our community...

Hello to all our sisters & brothers in dance...

I have an announcement regarding one of our beloved friends & teachers in the community, Carolee Cameron. Unfortunately, Carolee has been recently diagnonsed with Breast Cancer. And upon further testing, they have discovered that the cancer has already spread to her lymph nodes. This means that she will soon be facing chemo, radiation, and a possible full mastectomy.

Carolee is handling all of this with much positive and courageous enthusiasm. She even said that she would be grateful to lose her leg hair as it would mean she wouldn't have to shave anymore!! Talk about seeing the silver lining! I love her!

However, Carolee does have some financial concerns. She is going to need to take at least 6 weeks off of work to go through treatment. She only has 6 days of sick time remaining. The Intensive is going to give her enough money for one week off. But that still leaves 4 more weeks uncovered.

So...I know that our community can rise to the occassion and help raise the needed funds for Carolee. I am going to make the April hafla a fundraiser for Carolee. I am also happy to hold a silent auction but I need someone that can run it? Is there anyone out there that could manage the silent auction at the May 24th hafla?

Any other fundrasier ideas would also be appreciated. I'm completely open to doing a car wash. We can do it at the Durango studio on a Sunday sometime.

Also, no matter what your spiritual affiliation, if you have any spiritual practice...please send healing prayer, universal engery, positive thoughts, or what have you to Carolee.

LV Intensive update...

Ok..another update. The bad news is that 3 more classes have sold out at the Intensive. Sacha, Saida, & Angela's classes are now full.

Additionally, there are only 5 spots left in Ava's advanced class, 3 spots left in Marjhani's class, and 6 spots left in Habib's class. We are also getting close to selling out Oberon's veil class and Danya's poi class due to space requirements.

HOWEVER....

The good news is that I was able to secure another room at Palace Station on Saturday. So we will soon open a 4th track on Saturday. This will be an "overflow" track and will only have classes that are being repeated. Nothing new...just more opportunity to work with some of these instructors.

Not all sold out classes will be repeated, but we are doing our best to offer as many classes as possible.

ALSO, a la carte shopping is now available. If you are not able to take the full package, you can now sign up for classes individually.

stolen bellydance costume

Hi, so last night someone broke into my car and stole a bunch of stuff, including a bellydance costume I had worn to Rakkasah with my troupe. All the pieces to the costume belonged to my troupe director, Rossah, and have a great sentimental value. I'm hanging flyers around my neigborhood in an attempt to maybe get them back (I mean, unless they know a bellydancer, what would they do with a belly dance costume?)

What was stolen was all in a retro white suit case and it included blue harem pants, a bronze belt & coin bra, a ghawazee black coat, a nickel alloy headpiece, cuffs, and necklace.

please, if anyone sees these items at the flea market, thrift stores buy them and please return!

I'm offering a reward for the pieces.

Costume question.

Hi guys. Ok, so this is my first post here and maybe this isn't really the sort of thing to post here (in which case you can all yell at me or something).
I was thinking about buying a 25 yard skirt from www.moondancebellydance.com and I just wondered if any of you knew if their skirts were good or not? Meaning light, flowy and well made. Or, if you guys know of someone who sells something like that here in town... or if any of you are just master sewers who would just LOVE to teach me? :)
Oh, also, does anyone know a good place to find tribal style bras that would fit large bust sizes, like 40DDD, and 36F?

Vendors are welcome. Please just show up early to claim your space. I am usually there by 6:30 to set up.

We will also be having the infamous "Improv" Contest. Yes, you too could be a winner. Join up for this one-of-a-kind dance contest. Nobody knows what the music will be until we play it.

I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone for making my birthday weekend the best EVER!

Friday night was SO much fun...Inara was beautiful and stunning! We all rocked out free style dancing afterwards, and had a BLAST! I loved learning the greek dance...OPA!

The hafla was so much fun, I just couldn't STAND it! (mwa ha ha) Other than falling on my ass, it was the perfect way to spend my birthday.

And...thanks to everyone who came out to Quinn's afterwards...I'm frightened to see those pictures... YIKES! ;)

I love you guys SO much...this is the best community...

New teaching schedule!!

Hello beautiful dancers,

I'm happy to announce that the injuries to my back are finally healing due to multiple epidural injections in my spine and disks, yuck!! (you don't even want to know the details of what they do to me, especially if you have a week stomach, LOL) I have 2 more to go, Woohooo!! And am writing this post surgery, so if my grammar/spelling is way off, I blame it on the anesthesiology!!

So for the last 4 months I have stopped all one on one coaching, and replaced it with my 4 week sessions. The 11 privates a week, along with a minimum of at least 16 shows a week and my workshop tour was killing me! So now that I am on the mend, I am opening up my private coaching schedule with the following days and times:

Mon: 12 PM, 1 PM, 2 PM, 4 PM
Tues: 11 AM, 12 PM, 1 PM, 2 PM, 3 PM
Wed: 12 PM, 1 PM, 2 PM, 4 PM
Thurs: 12 PM, 1 PM, 2 PM 3 PM, 6 PM, 7 PM
Fridays will vary due to travel, so email me if this day works for you, and we can work something out
Saturday : 12 PM, 1 PM, 2 PM Again, it will vary if I am on the road teaching

Private coaching is a great way to work on specific topics, i.e., veil, zills, Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish, drum solo/shimmies, layering, floor work, various folklore topics, veil fans/double veil, learning history and what is appropriate within the dance, comparing styles and regional acceptance etc. Basically I'm an open book, and you tell me what you want to learn!! (Oh yeah, I won't even pretend to know tribal, I've had one class with FCBD 9 years ago!!!)

Choreography work is also available, whether it's working on one of your pieces that you have started, if you are in need of an original choreography for a special event, as well as choreography's for dance companies, I choreographed some of the dances at Purdue University last spring, and am working on some original pieces for a Canadian dance company for the next year.

Please contact me offline at Aradia@AradiaLV.com for any questions. The schedule is not set in stone, and I will be happy to work around your schedule, yes, I did on going privates with one of our local dancers from 11 PM to midnight on a weekly basis!!
As long as you don't want me up at 8 AM we will be fine! I'm a night owl, and until I've had several cups of coffee I look , and act like Medusa! LOL!!

PS. Semi privates are available as well, so if you and your dance buddy want to reduce the cost , we can do it! Future 4 week sessions may come about, but nothing is planned at this time!

Hey!!!!

So, I am coming to Vegas for the weekend April 11th, 12th, and 13th. IT'S MY FIRST TIME!! I know this isn't really bellydance related, but fellow bellydancers always share similar tastes and interests, right?

Friday night we're (my girlfriends and I) going to bed ealy because we're getting up to do the Irongirl Saturday morning. Saturday and Sunday night we're celebrating!

So my questions for the Vegas bellydancers are:

What/Where good, cheap places to get pedicures? Massages? The hotel spas are absolutely ridiculous!!

Other cool stuff to do during the day?

Cool "off the beaten path" stuff to do? Can be bellydance related or not.

Shows that are fun and not overpriced?

Good places to eat?

I am sooooo excited!! I want to know where the REAL Vegas people go and take their out-of-towners.

Within this, we will explore the use of body angles, moving the energy ball and the aspects of pop and lock by interlacing holds and accents into our current language. Rakkasah report!!

Wow, I had a great weekend at Rakksah, there were some beautiful dancers, Naheda from Germany, Nadira from Seattle, Oreet from NY rocked the house with a cool samba meets Africa drum solo. There was this awsome Nubian dance company from NY, they were very authentic, well researched in the dances they did, just gorgeous!! A lot of dancers were using American music, the four tops, grateful dead, some of it was too far out for my taste.

Suhaila did a killer number on Saturday with her dance company, military style with swords, think Marine Corp in bra's and belts, very precision, Suhaila was the drill sergent! Those girls looked like they could whoop some ass!

I would like to see more oriental, west coast leans very heavy into fusion, but some of it was really good! I hung out with our buddy Alfredo, and have some pics to post, I even wore a lemon yellow Bebe sweatsuit since he and I had that running joke about us doing a duet in lemon yellow!!
I bought a smokin' hot biker leather costume with a beautiful french pucci black and white skirt and arm skirts, it's an original from Tim at Dahlals, he's shortening it and will get it to me in a week, think high society meets hells angels!! Very skimpy Turkish, 1950's Egyptian style skirt, can't wait to wear it!!

A Heads Up...

Hey folks!!

I just wanted to let you all know that the registration for the
Intensive had really been astounding. I already have sold more full-
weekend packages than I ever have in the history of running this
event. And it's only March.

Truthfully, at this rate, we will sell out this event by May or
June. Really. And the last thing I want is for any of the locals to
not get to take the workshops. Currently 64% of my registrations are
from out of state--which is really a gigantic shift in our
demographic.

So this is your official "heads up". This event was truly created
for our local community. I love that we have so many people coming
to check us out, but I really want my locals involved too! Obviously
we will plan more tracks & space for the Intensive/WOW event in 09,
but I can't get more space or add more in 08.

If you have thought you could put this off, please re-think your
strategy. We have payment plans available. I really really do not
want any of you to miss out.

Also, the hotel rooms are 50% full as well. If you want to get a

Tribal Fusion and Suhaila Format classes with Marisa

This week is the start of a new rotation for my classes!

Monday (today!): Tribal Fusion at StudiOhm at 6:30 pm. Tonight we'll get to hear the music for the next choreography, which I am really excited about. Next week we'll start the choreography in earnest--today we'll just go over the themes of the piece.

Wednesday: Suhaila Salimpour Format Level 1 at Backstage at 7 pm. We'll start a new 8-week rotation this week.

Application Deadline for 08 Las Vegas Intensive Performance Consideration

Based on the feedback we received last year, we are going to be having two separate and distinct shows on Sept. 5th & 6th of the 2008 Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive. We will also be having an after-party hafla on Sunday the 7th.

We are looking for talented artists to create distinct and unique shows that encompass a wide range of styles and dancers. We give preference to Intensive participants, people travelling from out-of-state, truly gifted performers, and those that can follow directions. Some locals will be encouraged to perform at the Sunday night after-party as many travellers will be leaving at that time.

Our selection committee will review the applications and send out offers to those that we feel would fit our vision best. There are always more applicants than space available and lack of inclusion does not mean lack of appreciation in any way shape or form.

If you or your troupe are interested in applying for consideration to perform in one of the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive shows, please be advised that all applications must be complete and all requirements met by our deadline of April 5th.

Requirements:
DVD/You Tube performance video: Minimum run time of 1 minute with a maximum run time of 3 minutes. Please submit a performance within the genre or style in which you would like to perform.

Dance resume: Professional resume with contact information, affiliations, performances, training and education, etc...

Performance description: Minimum one paragraph with detailed information on style/genre of performance you would like a chance to dance to at the show.

Silly Question

I did not see it on the website and I know the 2007 Intensive hafla was held at Backstage II and our normal haflas are at Arthur Murray. I just don't want to show up at the wrong location. Well, almost...
Seriously considering a move to Henderson or Las Vegas soon and I look forward to the fun and friendship in bellydance out there. I am a dancer for the joy of the music and being with others of the same. A "vintage" dancer from the 1970's, who has not lost a single movement. I'd love to get to know all of you to share in dance.
Also, can anyone tell me if or where in the LV area I can find a Mid-East grocery? I may be spoiled by the large Arab population here in Michigan, with the availability of spices, Turkish coffee and fresh baklava...My kitchen often smells like a Mediteranean restaurant and I can read a good fortune from the coffee...Or, is this a new business opportunity for me there? :-))

I am incredibly excited to announce that in September 2009, Wiggles of the West (formerly of Reno, NV) and the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive will be uniting forces to create an incredibly diverse and comprehensive event experience! Although the two events will remain separate entities, we are working together to merge the activities into 5 solid days of incredible workshops, contests, shows, and shopping—all in the fabulous city of Las Vegas, NV.

The Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive has organized multiple tracks of level and style specific workshops in Vegas for the last 6 years. Wiggles of the West brings 12 years of belly dance competition experience to the table. It is our belief that by joining these two reputable events together, we will create a diverse and world-class experience for belly dancers in the Entertainment Capital of the World.

Do you have works that cannot be presented at traditional Middle Eastern dance venues? Are there political, social, or economical issues you would like to explore through the dance? Then submit your work for the 2008 "An Evening of Experimental Middle Eastern Dance (EEMED)."

Fahtiem Workshop Postponed (Hafla is still happening...)

Sad news. Fahtiem has gotten that nasty flu bug that is going around. So she is too ill to travel, dance, and teach. She and I will re-group after she recovers to figure out a time on the calendar that she can return to Vegas.

Anyone who has paid for Fahtiem via paypal will have their money refunded automatically. Including anyone who paid for the hafla. The Hafla will still happen on Saturday, but for bookkeeping purposes, it will be easier if I refund everything and you can pay at the door.

Additionally, the February Hafla is now only $5 at the door.

If you paid via check, I will refund your money for the workshops at the hafla in person, or if you prefer, i can mail you the balance.

Visiting Vegas

Hi Guys!

Ok, so I have three tribal classes planned when I'm in Vegas, and now I'm looking into seeing some performances! The 19th-24th I'll have pretty much open, so apart from restaurant gigs is anything going down? I'm happy to see both Cabaret and Tribal stuff.

It seems like it may be a quiet week for y'all, since I haven't found anything yet in my searches. But I'm hoping there are a few things as yet unlisted.

We go to Vegas every year for about 10 days, so I hope to take classes and get to know some of the talent here.

Bellyfriend to crash with for The Tribal Massive?

Hey LV Bellydancers!

My name is Cera, I'm coming down in March for The Tribal Massive & to
perform in The Tribal Spectacular. It's my first visit to Vegas, and
I'm really excited!
I'm in a bit of a bind though - a friend offered that I could stay
with him, but his place is a 2 hour bus ride from Backstage Studio,
where the workshop is being held. (I cant drive, so renting a car is out.)

Is there anyone down there who is either attending the workshops, and
would be willing to take in a stray dancer for the week? Getting a
hotel room and interested in sharing with more than one other dancer? I'm trying to keep my costs as low as possible.

On friday night I'll be joined by one of the dancers in my company
who's just coming down to do the performance, and I'm hoping that
where ever I am, she could stay as well.

I'm courteous & friendly! I keep to myself! I'm housebroken! I have
character references! I come bearing chocolate!

Fahtiem Returns to Vegas Feb. 9th & 10th...

She's one of our local favorites...and for good reason!! Fahtiem is
an internationally acclaimed dancer and instructor who has travelled
all over the world with this art!!

The February Community Hafla will feature a performance by this
graceful and inspiring dancer. The event will take place at our

Samira's BDay Bash and Hafla

Have I told you all how much I love this community? Last night was great as usual and there was a huge turn out for the festivities. All the dancers looked amazing and it is so wonderful to see the different styles come together at one time under one roof. That is what I love about our haflas...the variety. I was hoping Samira would dance with the assembled drummers for her birthday but oh well. Nisha not only had a kick ass workshop earlier that day but I was excited to see how fast her attendees caught on to the choreagraphy. You all looked really good for only having learned it in an hour. I had some great surprises because I did not think a few of you that danced were going to dance. Anyway, If I do not attend GothLA I look forward to February.

IT IS OFFICIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a Grandma. Dominick Oryan Jackson was born January 8, 2008 at 5:11pm. He was 7 lbs/7oz and 20.25 inches long. Mom and baby are doing fine but there were complications towards the end.

He will be playing the dombeks for Nanna in no time.

My digital camera went MIA so I had to use a disposable camera and take video so unfortunately there are no pics of the baby to share yet unless you were the lucky few who received a video of the baby's first 30 minutes of life on your cell phone.

Sunday, January 13

World and Ethnic dancers 9:30 am – 12:00 pm
Female exotic/burlesque dancers 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm
Professional male exotic dancers 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm
Street and break dancers 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm

All dancers from these categories will be asked to perform their own 2-minute prepared piece. Please bring music.

Monday, January 14

Male contemporary/classical/jazz dancers 9:30 am – 1:00 pm
Female contemporary/classical/jazz dancers 1:30 am – 5:00 pm

In addition to being taught a series of challenging combinations, dancers should be prepared to perform their own 2-minute prepared piece. Please bring music.

I'm posting this from an e-mail I received from Azita today. Please see the album for a pic of her reward flyer.

PLEASE keep your eyes open for these 2 costumes. They are distinctly "Azita" style coin costumes. Both are gorgeous and there will be no mistaking them. Please get a message to Azita if you see either a red or a burgundy costume like this red one.

I'm heartsick for her.

A Burgundy & gold coined Bra & belt set with 2 burgundy skirts, harem pants, 2 burgundy choli’s and gold veil.
&
A Red with gold coin bra & belt set with red skirts with black swirls, black skirt, harem pants and matching choli.

This is the red & gold bra & belt.
The burgundy is almost the same.

If you should see these items on EBAY or anyone wearing the costumes please let me know. You will get a reward.

Ah Ya Helu Raks (a belly dance show) on Fri & Sat... Dec. 7th & 8th

Hey folks. I didn't realize that not only is Ah Ya Helu performing, but so is Ethnophonica (Naimah & troupe), Farasha (YUM!), Al-Ateeka (YaShara & troupe), Raqaseen (Amira & troupe), and New World Rhythmatism (Josh/Deb & troupe).

I'm going to go with Tanya on Friday and hopefully with Nicki on Saturday. Who else is going?

January 2--Sizzling combinations for Egyptian, Lebanese and Turkish Oriental dance-this is an extension of Aradia's instructional DVD, we will learn combinations that can used in oriental show with an emphasis on improvisation

January 9--Sensual Taqsim--explore the passionate side of oriental dance as we learn about the different instruments used for taqsim, and methods of using your body to interpret that instrument

January 16--Folklore!! Classical Persian--learn the delicate hand gestures and gliding movements to 6/8 rhythms that make classical Persian dance fun and playful. This dance is about being cute and coy!!!

January 23--Rock the House Drum Solo!!--we will cover shimmy drills for oriental and folkloric style shimmies, incorporate them into a drum solo with emphasis on combinations and working with live drummers.

new tribal fusion class

Beginning Tribal Fusion Belly dance With Nisha

This is a 6-week course that will cover the basics of tribal fusion belly dance. You will learn how to isolate your muscles and move with grace and elegance. This 1st 6 weeks will cover, chest, arms undulations, and posture. Please wear form fitting comfortable clothing. Any yoga wear is ok. Please do not wear coin belts; a simple sash or fringe belt will be acceptable. Bring a yoga mat, water and notebook to keep notes on what you learn in class.

For full 6 week course is 90 dollars Jan 3 – Feb 7th

Drop in fee of 20 a class

When: Thursday’s from 6-7 pm At the Physic Eye bookshop on Charleston and Rainbow.

Last Night's Hafla

Frèdèrique and Astryd were amazing. Two sides of the same talented belly dancing coin. This was a true testament on how Tribal Fusion and traditional Cabaret can come together in the same room and produce the same reaction. I loved them both and they definitely put a lid on the long standing debate.

Seraphinas performance was so cute. The routine based the three troublesome kids from the Nightmare Before Xmas was amazing. The costumes were hot, festive, and true to their style. (Kudos on finding that pattern). They were fun funky and I always love watching them perform.

Nisha my darlin, you were great as always and I love that music. I am in awe every time I see your pops and locks.

Yasmin - Girl you were hot hot hot. For your first ever tribal fusion piece you pulled it off and you looked good.

Amira and the crew - I never get tired of that cane dance and the red costumes were sizzling. Yowza!

Amaryllis damn woman even with two bum legs....lol kidding. You were so awesome. You were spunky energetic and I am glad you got out there. I am so excited about the Non-Profit and know I am always available if you need volunteers.

The two lovely young ladies (sorry I don't remember your names) who danced first were cute and the duo showed great technique and showmanship. I hope to see more of you.

Again this was another amazing hafla (my firs Holiday one) and I look forward to many more.

The Tito Rumors...

I've had a number of people contact me because the IBDC website is now advertising workshops for Tito in Vegas this upcomming February. The dates happen to be the same dates for the annual workshops with Fahtiem, whom I am hosting.

As per a conversation I had with Alex Herrera this morning, there will not be workshops with Tito here in Vegas during that weekend due to the conflict with Fahtiem. Alex told me that he did not want either workshop to suffer due to the other.

Alex also told me that although Tito is doing a show on Feb. 10th, that event is a private function and not open to the public.

I hope this clears the air for everyone.
